Theresa M. Schuman, PhD
I am a licensed clinical psychologist, working in the Bay Area since 1988 and offering a range of services. I have a private practice in Lafayette where I treat children, adolescents, adults and families. My clinical experience has been varied in that I have worked with those experiencing trauma, depression and anxiety, as well as those transitioning from psychiatric hospitalization. One of my specialties is treating individuals and families who are having difficulty navigating the post-separation/divorce process and are seeking help finding the best outcomes for them and their children whether this be through individual therapy, co-parent counseling, or mediation.
My education includes a Master’s Degree from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico and a doctorate in Family Clinical Psychology from the California Graduate School of Marital and Family Therapy. I interned at Children’s Hospital in Oakland and Oak Grove Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital. I was first trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in 2003 and have led cognitive behavioral therapy groups, DBT Informed psychotherapy groups, as well as dual diagnosis groups. I currently co-lead adult DBT skills training groups, have been intensively trained in DBT and office a full-range of DBT therapy Services.
It is my personal philosophy that no one has a life without difficulties. I am dedicated to helping people manage difficult circumstances due to a variety of causes in a way that allows for growth, reduced suffering, and an increased ability to enjoy life.
